Almudena Cathedral (Catedral de la Almudena / full name: Catedral de Santa María la Real de La Almudena) is the seat of the catholic archdiocese of Madrid and one of the newest cathedral churches in Spain and Europe.

Construction began in the late 19th century and was completed and consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993. Thanks to this, Madrid’s cathedral is unique in style featuring various colorful contemporary art styles.

The grey and white baroque façade was designed to match the Royal Palace facing the cathedral.

On May 22, 2004, the marriage of King Felipe VI, then crown prince, to Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano took place at the cathedral.
